The Practice of Enterprise Architecture

The practice of Enterprise Architecture is rapidly becoming established in the Corporate environmnent as a basis for linking the development of systems and capabilities to business outcomes.  However EA as a field is still relatively new and the field is developing rapidly as Enterprise Architects gain experience in the application of the discipline to resolve business problems and identify new capability requirements. EcoThought is contributing to the development of that body of knowledge in corporate environments.

However, whilst the field of Enterprise Architecture  is comparatively new, it has it's roots in the basis of the Human Enterprise itself. This linkage will be explored in a later post. This blog explores the Enterprise Architecture model itself.

The field of Enterprise Architecture was developed to capture the linkage between business capability requirements and the application of technology to enable and enhance the mission of the enterprise. The focus of EA is on the analysis of the relationship between the business, the people both internal and external to the business, the processes used by the business and the technologies used by the business. A range of models have been developed which provide different ways of viewing the output of the architectural analysis process.

EcoThought works extensively in the application of the practice of EA in government and corporate environments and as such has gained extensive experience in working with the different models and approaches used to develop Enterprise level architectures. One field of specialisation in our work is the application of EA principles and practices in police and emergency first responder environments.

As a result of our work with these agencies, EcoThought has developed an alternative approach to EA based on the inclusion of the environment as an additional element in the EA model as shown below.

This model allows us to start considering how built and natural environments shape and are shaped by enterprise practices. The implications for human and environmental sustainability can therefore be incorporated into the Enterprise Architecture model and the associated analysis.
